St. Augustine is having a birthday – and boy, is it a big one! Founded in 1565, this picturesque Florida town has the distinction of being the “oldest permanent European settlement in North America.” This year, the city’s birthday observance will include street festivals, breathtaking fireworks displays and plenty of pageantry. These exciting events culminate in the official birthday party September 4-7 and a grand procession on Founder’s Day, September 8.
So what can you expect at Celebrate 450? The fun begins on Friday, September 4, 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. It’s the 3-day Music & Street Festival! The festival includes historical and cultural performances on multiple stages downtown; the main stage is located at the bayfront.
Come watch the spectacular fireworks show on Saturday, September 5, from 9 until 11 p.m. near the Matanzas River.
Want to sample some local culture on Sunday, September 6? Attend the Spanish Music and Dance Performance sponsored by the EMMA Concert Association. The performance is scheduled at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. The gates open at 3 p.m., and the fun begins at 4:00 p.m. with the St. Augustine Community Chorus and First Coast Opera and Limelight Theatre.
Sample something sweet at the Cake Cutting and Proclamation Reading on Monday, September 7. This will take place at the gazebo in the Plaza de la Constitucion. Music group Driftwoods performs from noon until 2 p.m., and the proclamation will be read after that.
Celebrate 450 ends with the Countdown Clock Ceremony, the Menendez Landing Re-Enactment, and the procession that ends at Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine for the Commemorative Mass.
