VENICE FLORIDA PUBLIC GOLF COURSES
Bird Bay is a public golf course with no restrictions on visitors and guests. You have the option to play either 18 or 9-holes of golf, but if you are interested in playing 9-holes check with reservations for special times and rates. It is best to call ahead to set up a tee time but reservations are taken on short notice. If you arrive at Bird Bay during a slow time of year, between May and September, there is the opportunity to play without a tee time scheduled.
Located a few blocks from the beach, with Blackburn Canal running through the course, beware that this golf course is a challenging 18-hole course with a lot of water in play. Capri Isles is a 72-par course, enjoyable for a range of golfers and offers different challenges for everyone. Remember that no metal spikes are allowed on the newly refurbished greens and that proper golf attire is required.
Lake Venice Golf Club has a range of facilities with 27 holes total. Get in a quick morning or afternoon game of 9 holes before meeting up with the family to head to the beach, or try out a combination of courses for a full 18 holes. The course is set up with three 9-hole courses that can be played together in three different 18-hole combinations.
Waterford Golf Club is definitely a favorite of regular golfers with varying abilities. Known for receiving the best of Venice award in 2004 and listed in the Top 20 golf courses in the southwestern region of Florida, Waterford offers 27 holes of rippling greens and rolling fairways, with plenty of hazards and water in play throughout the course. Three 9- hole golf courses are available, the Turnberry, Gleneagles, or Sawgrass courses, for a combination of three different 18-hole games. This gives visitors the opportunity to come back throughout the week and try a totally new game at the same beautiful course.
Ranked in the top 20 golf courses in the Florida guidebook for golf resources, the Venetian Golf and River Club is a beautifully crafted 18-hole, par-72 golf course framed by an abundance of trees and greenery, making for an excellent day of golf. The course provides challenges, hazards and bunkers that keep players on their toes, just enough to keep the avid golfer entertained, but not too many that the amateur golfer will get frustrated easily. The small canal like rivers and streams running through the course are reminiscent of the canals of Venice, but don’t cause much threat as far as water interference. You will find beautiful homes intertwined throughout the golf course, as the Venetian Golf and River Club is part of a community built within 70-acres of a nature park. This creates a peaceful, calm environment to help keep your golf game steady.

Venice Florida is not only a place to play golf during vacation, but also a place with unlimited potential for fishing due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico.
Some popular fish you will find in the Gulf waters are grouper, hogfish, dolphin (mahi mahi), seabass, shark, and even sailfish. There are many other fish that have a shorter fishing pattern in the Gulf Coast, so depending on what time of the year you choose to visit you may also be able to find red snapper, amberjack, cobia, barracuda, and king mackarel.
Whether you are an expert fisherman or a novice who just wants to try throwing out a line, there are many places to test your fishing skills in the Venice area. Remember that one of the first things you want to do is obtain a temporary Florida fishing license while visiting the area, unless a sight specifically posts that you can fish without a license. If you are in the need for bait and tackle, most bait and tackle shops or local convenience stores near the water will also sell a temporary or even year-long fishing license for less than $20. There are both freshwater and saltwater licenses, but for your purposes in Venice, you will want to make sure you purchase a saltwater license unless you plan to adventure in the nearby lakes away from the sea.
There are a few different choices for fishing charters in the Venice area, intercoastal or deep-sea fishing charters. A good place to try either experience is the Florida Deep Sea Fishing Charters. They carry the fishing charter “Legacy,” which is docked at Crow’s Nest Marina near Venice Public Beach. Prices start at $475 dollars for 4 hours of up to 12 miles offshore. From Venice Public Beach take a right on Esplanade, then go about 1/2 mile to stop sign. Take a left on Tarpon Center Drive then go 1/2 mile and you will see The Crow's Nest Marina on your right. It is best to call ahead for reservations at 941-473-4603.
If you will be in Venice, FL for the winter months the Gaona Sportfishing Charters will also be available in the area with Summertime Lady II. The Summertime Lady II has been featured on many outdoors sporting television programs and would be a real treat for your stay in Venice. They offer trolling, deep-sea fishing, bottom fishing, fly fishing and tarpon fishing. You can reach Captain Marco Gaona on the boat at 941-488-2311 or through email at gaonafish@aol.com.
Not an expert fisherman or want to stay with your feet planted on the shore? The Venice Fishing Pier at Brohard Park on Harbor Drive offers a 700-foot fishing pier, where you are not required to have a fishing license to fish from the pier. Another famous spot for fishing on the shore is Humphris Park, otherwise known as South Jetty, located at the southern tip of the Intracoastal Waterway, at the end of Tarpon Center Drive.
